Children's Blue Transferware Miniature Sugar PotGOAT GIRLCork, Edge & Malkin ~ Staffordshire England c. 1850 This is a gorgeous transferware toy covered sugar pot or biscuit jar, circa 1860, originally part of a complete miniature children's tea service. The little pot stands 3 3/4" tall on a raised pedestal base, with fancy finial, moulded handles and flared rim. The sugar is transfer printed in a rich cobalt blue finished with pearlware glaze. It is decorated in the scarce GOAT pattern (also known as "Goat Girl"), depicting a girl dancing with her pet goat. T is a manor house in the background with lush vegetation and a twisted loop border pattern. The decoration repeats on each side of the pot and is so elaborate that t is very little white space. The pot is unmarked except for a tiny tally mark. The pattern name is "GOAT" and other pieces in the same pattern are found with an impressed mark of the maker, Cork Edge and Malkin & Co, a 19th century pottery manufactory in the Staffordshire region of England. The pattern is discussed in Doris Lechler's English Toy China as well as Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Pottery and Porcelain from the UK and US . The sugar is in fair condition -- the base has a chip on the outside rim and 2 tiny spoon dings on the inside rim; the lid has small chipping and nibbles around the edge, as shown read more
