A hard to find late 1800's or very early 1900's tin lithographed advertising matchsafe for Allyn & Blanchard Co. of Hartford, Conn. This fancy Victorian era hanging style match stick holder is earlier that most lithographed metal matchholders. The advertising match safe was made by the famous Ginna & Co. manufacturers of NewYork. It is more elaborate and larger than most advertising match holders. The coffee and spice advertising premium has a fancy raised and scalloped lithographed border. The back advertising sign portion of the holder reads: Our Coffees And Spices Are Of Our Own Importation And Are The Best Allyn & Blanchard Co. Hartford, Conn. The sign also contains very intricite floral and geometric lithograph designs. In the center is an attached match bin that has an image of a bearded man wearing a turbin. Each edge of the matchbox has a fancy litho design. The bottom of the matchbin is marked: Ginna & Co. Manufacturers New York. Below the match box is a rasp like area that served as a match striker. This early advertising match safe is in very good condition. Light specks of litho loss, some grime, and wear with some surface oxidation on the matchstriker area. Many of these early Ginna era lithographed tin items were very prone to litho loss and flaking. This example shows very little of that problem. The great coffee and read more
