EARLY Howard's Patent 8in. BEVEL GAUGE -- Fine! FINE CONDITION! Marked "Pat'd Nov. 5, 1867" at the very top of the Rosewood stock just below the tightening nut and stamped further down the stock with the Star Tool Company Star Trademark. The markings are somewhat light but quite unmistakable. 8" steel blade. Brass trim with Howard's distinctive diamond shaped brass tightening nut. The patent was issued to Leonard D. Howard of St. Johnsbury, Vermont for the recessed locking nut. This was an innovation in carpenters bevel gages that was later widely used by Stanley and others. The Star Tool Company was an assignee of or agent for Howard. This example likely dates to the 1870's and is in fine working condition with a beautiful patina on the metal and wood. It has been cleaned to high collector standards. The brass has NOT been polished! T is some very light pitting on the blade that may well go back to the time of manufacture. Dinging and scratching in the metal and wood is very very minimal. Rates FINE even after 135 years. A beautiful tool that feels really good in your hand! Buy it to use! In the long run it will not cost you any more than that phosphorous yellow one down at Home Depot and you can always put this historically important bevel gauge back on eBay and get ALL of your money back! FINE CONDITION. Watch out for snipers! read more
