ANDREWS* * * *- Made in 1857 -This is a pair of engravings of the English nurse Florence Nightingale and the American nurse Annie Andrews, images made over a century and a half ago, four years before the American Civil War began. These two historic engravings, reflecting the start of professional nursing as we know it today, were accompanied by a narrative describing the early accomplishments of these two women, which were quite recent when these were published, as well an engraving of a medal which had been awarded to Miss Andrews. FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE :M odern nursing is said to owe its start to Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), an English social reformer who came to prominence during her service as a nurse during the Crimean War, when she cared for wounded soldiers. During that conflict she became known as "The Lady with the Lamp" because of her habit of making rounds at night.
