An Early Paper Mache Surprise Doll in Original Box

Pricing & History
9 (23 cm.) 9 h. x 6 w. A heavy card-board box with embossed paper cover and rich gilded decorations has a stage-like window at the front, exhibiting a paper mache woman with sculpted black hair, wooden hands and original costume who is standing behind a green flocked table that contains a lidded blue box and two milk glass cups and saucers. When the box is turned upside down it appears that the same scene is shown, except that now there are two glass decanters and two goblets on the table, rather than the cups and saucers. The magic trick is that there are actually two paper mache heads with identical costumes, and two blue boxes; the entire scene is changed although it appears to be only the tableware. Condition: interior scenes are excellent and perfectly preserved, the box is somewhat worn and the lid is quite worn. French, circa 1850, a very rare and delightful toy.
