Buy with Confidence! H. Stewart H. Antiques has been selling on eBay since 1998! Classic Fishing Sailboat Seascape by Hendrik Willem Mesdag depicted on a 1905 Dutch blue & white Delft tile by Royal Delft de Porceleyne Fles and painted by Andreas Petrus Guerain, (active 1887-1938). The artist Mesdag was active 1831-1915 - his seascapes and fishing fleet paintings grace many of the world's greatest museums. This particular painting has not been identified - it is of a gaff rigged fishing boat setting sail with several in the background already under sail. The tile measures 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, mounted within its original period frame it measures 8 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches, (professionally remounted at some time in the past) - tile appears to be in excellent original condition, (I have not removed it from the frame) light crackle to glaze overall, marked on the front: naar H.W. Mesdag, marked on reverse: with Royal Delft Porceleyne Fles Urn 'F' 'Delft' '223' 'AG', (artist Andreas Guerain), 'AA' (date letters for 1905) - does not have the Joost Thooft & LaBouchere circle mark but does have an impressed sideways fish mark and the number 236 - which I believe is a mark by that company.
