Zeno ManufacturingCompany The Zeno Co. was a major chewing gum maker in the early 1880's thru early 1900's and began making gum vending machines in 1893. Zeno was similar to the Pulver Co. in that it made good business sense to sell your own chewing gum in your own vending machine. Zeno Mfg. sold an assortment of what were popular chewing gum flavors in addition to a few unusual flavors such as yucca and vanilla cream. The Zeno Manufacturing Co. made chewing gum and vending machines from 1893 until 1911 when Wm. Wrigley Jr. purchased the Zeno Company. Wrigley started buying his chewing gum from the Zeno Co. in 1892 after discovering that chewing gum was easier and more profitable than selling soap or baking powder. The first Zeno machine was made of finished wood and the final machines were a bright-yellow, porcelain enameled machine with easily seen bold-black lettering. (see posted photos) Zeno was "thee" chewing gum to buy before Wrigley bought the company in 1911 and discontinued the Zeno brand to make way for the Wrigley name which eventually became the worlds largest/most successful chewing gum company. Gum chewer's enjoyed the purchase from a wooden or bright-yellow colored Zeno machine which was part of the Zeno experience.
