This is a used unopened bottle of Edison battery oil. The Thomas A Edison name is molded into the bottle. The cap is rusted. This oil was used in nickel-iron plate batteries made by Edison. It was poured into each cell to prevent gassing and evaporation. Full bottles are rare as empties were ofter thrown trackside.and are easily found. The batteries were used in signal boxes and other railroad equipment. They were also used in early automobiles.
