Edwin Dalton Smith (1800-1866) Portrait of a sitting lady ina bonnet. Watercolor on paper, signed lower right, dated 1838. Painting shown is 9" x12", Frame 17" x 19 ½. Painting is in very good condition. Period gold leaf frame, probably original? frame has a few marks and scratches. Eddwin Dalton Smith lived in Chelsea, London, and was taught by his father, an engraver and miniaturist. Smith started his career as a fruit and flower painter. He was also an engraver and portrait miniaturist. He was employed by the Royal Gardens at Kew for many years as a botanical artist. Provenance from the Pebble Beach Estate of Richard Mellon Scaife. Richard Mellon Scaife (July 3, 1932 - July 4, 2014) was an American billionaire, a principal heir to the Mellon banking, oil, and aluminum fortune, and the owner and publisher of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review .
