Offerred here is a ancient Egyptian faience amulet depicting the goddess "SEKHMET" . This brilliant blue, ancient Egyptian faience amulet depicts the goddess Sekhmet in her lion-headed manifestation, wearing the disc crown of the sun, fronted with a cobra. Sekhmet is sharply detailed wearing a tripartite wig and decorated collar or "aegis" and is in near excellent condition. Sekhmet was the ancient Egyptian Goddess of War, Vengence, Disease, the Deset, and Sexuality and is often regarded in myth as an angry, vengeful manifestation of the Egyptian "Mother Goddess" Hathor. Ancient Egyptians wore amulets, small representations of their gods, as magical charms for protection. A believer would often place amulets or talismans, such as this, within burial shrouds to protect the deceased on their journey into the afterlife. The amulet's construction is that of faience and was produced by crushing quartz mixed with copper, then made into a paste. The paste would then be placed into clay molds and fired. The fusing of the quartz and copper would result in the distinctive blue/green color and glassy glaze. Over the centuries, time would eventually cause the glaze to dissipate, resulting in some loss of the shiny finish and exposing the natural sandstone subtrate.
