Recent Estate acquisition a woodcut by Elizabeth Keith 1887-1956 from 1925. This woodcut is one from a portfolio purchased from a local estate. The woodcut have been well cared for. This piece measures 10 1/2" x 15 3/4 ". This woodblock is untrimmed, has no water damage and very slight bend in right lower corner. It has very very slight tinting. Colors of the woodblock are extremely crisp and unfaded. This piece is signed in pencil by Elizabeth Keith. Red printmakers mark above name. Also on the back in ink is the title "T.L.Chang Man Gate , Soochow -in Rain" "Cut and Printed by E.K."is written on the upper right corner. The title of this woodblock is "Outside Chang Man Gate" This woodblock is in Very Good condition. Elizabeth Keith was born in England. Traveled to Tokyo in 1915 to visit a relative. Intriguedwith the Orient, she remained until 1924, making several trips to Korea, China,Philippines, and throughout Japan. First won recognition with a collection of caricatures of Japanese and foreign residents published in 1917 to benefit the Red Cross. In 1920 Watanabe Shozaburo saw an exhibition of watercolors from a recent trip to Korea and urged her to translate the painting East Gate, Seoul by Moonlight into a print.
