This doll was made by doll artist Ellen Turner in NC. ( see below for her bio) She is a character doll named Fannie for the Bee Tree School in NC. She was made in the 1992 and is marked # 18. She originally sold for over 500.00. Note the antique materials and tiny buttons she uses. She has hand painted textile cloth face and composition fabric hands. She is 18" tall and measures 9.5" across with her open arms. She is signed on the wooden base and has her original identifying tag. Her garment is made with antique/faded material and is consistent with a doll this age. Ellen Turner was known for capturing the characters who live in Appalachia and the mountains of Western NC. Ellen Turner lived 1933-1995- this doll was made 3 years before her passing at age 62. Turner was a member of the Southern Highlands Handicraft Guild and a member of the NIADA- National Institute of American Doll Artist. Her work is displayed in the Louvre Museum in Paris as referenced by NIADA.org. This doll is from the collection of the late Margaret Hartshorn of Fine Olde Dolls. American doll collector for over 50 years. (Margaret Hartshorn was also my mother.)
