ELNA GRASSHOPPER #1 is an A+ example of a work of fine Swiss craftsmanship. It is the Elna #1, made in 1951, known as the "Grasshopper" because of its green color. Enter Google with "Elna Grasshopper"to learn about the history of this wonderful collectible. It is an aluminum free arm machine that sews very well. It comes with a ton of attachments, a matching oil can, and a speed reducer which permits very slow careful stitching. Not shown in the photos is the brand new belt that I bought after the photo shoot. All of the oiling points on the machine are painted red for easy recognition, a small, but nice touch. The feet of the heavy bakelite parts box fit into holes in the bed so as to not move around. The act of putting the bobbin on the shaft for winding of itself disengages the rest of the machinery. Sewing mode returns when the filled bobbin is removed. I have always been a Singer Featherweight fan, but in terms of quality the featherweight is crude by comparison, both in design and in construction. This thing is built like a Swiss watch! The original manual and warrantee document are included. This particular specimen is in outstanding condition; no rust on this heavy duty chrome! After perusing closed auctions, I found that a comparable Grasshopper brought a little over $400.00, so that is w I will peg my "Buy it Now" price read more
