Emperor Meiji Empress Shoken Japan Uchida 1883 On Gold Leaf & Brocade Scroll Two cabinet-size albumen photos, each measuring 3.25 x 4.5 inches (85 x 115 mm), on a paper-backed scroll that measures 7.25 x 9.25 inches (185 x 235 mm). The photos are mounted on a gold leaf panel, 6.5 x 5.5 inches (165 x 140 mm), which is framed by brocade panels. As visible in the scans, the photos are wrinkled and slightly insect damaged, and there is insect damage to the brocade and the paper backing. Still an attractive piece overall. These photos of the Meiji Emperor and Empress Consort Shoken were taken by Uchida Kuichi in 1872 (Shoken) and 1873 (Meiji). The inscription on the reverse side of the roller is dated Meiji 16 [1883]. The Imperial Household Agency commissioned Uchida to take these photos to serve as official images for display in public offices. Private sale was prohibited, yet many copies did end up in private circulation. Guaranteed to be authentic. Free shipping anywhere in the world. _gsrx_vers_486 (GS 6.5.1 (486))
