Note that Bruce Brown was friends with John Van Hamersveld, and Brown hired him to do the art for the first release U.S. posters (both the 11x17 initial poster, plus the one-sheet poster that followed it a year later when the movie received a national release), because, as Brown has been quoted saying, "He was the only artist I knew".
