A gentleman’s Englishpin-set pocket watch by William Ehrhardt c1918, in a base metal case. Has a rotatable platform escapement. In working order. The movement appears to be the same as that illustrated in Alan Shenton’s ‘ Pocket Watches 19 th & 20 th Century ’ p142 plate 89B. To quote Shenton: “ Unusual feature of the movement is balance cock on rotating platform for adjustment of poise of bimetallic cut compensated balance… ” Shenton’s example, D2149, is dated by case hallmark to c1920. This example has a lower serial number, D565, so production is estimated c1918. “William Ehrhardt (1831-97) was an unwitting rival to Dennison to be the first person to employ machinery for the mass production of watches in England. … He chose Birmingham, England in 1856… In 1874 he built a factory (Time Works, Barr Street) to improve his rate of production. Ehrhardt’s firm survived until about 1924…” [Source: M.Cutmore ‘Watches 1850-1980’] Movement: A gilt full-plate 7-jewel movement by William Ehrhardt. The movement is inscribed with the serial number D565. It has a rotatable platform escapement (see above). It is stem-wound and pin-set*. It sets and winds OK and is running well.
