This fine old handsome English sterling silver snuff box was made in Birmingham, in 1844, presented to Mr. John Scott in 1847, per the inscription on the lid. I am unable to make out the initials of the giver. Made by Edward Smith. It is a nice, heavy box, machine turned on the edges and bottom, and around the cartouche on the lid. The lid edges are heavily scrolled. The hallmarks are quite visible. The lid fits tightly, and the hinge is in excellent working order. Some wear to the interior which has lost most of the gold gilt, which may be expected on a box over 164 years old which was actually used! A scratch or two. This item is an antique and was used for the purpose for which it was designed. It is being sold as is. Weight is approximately 4 1/4 oz. Length: 3 1/4 inches, width: 1 7/8 inches, height: 3/4 ".
