This auction is for a stunning large example of a crinoid fossil of the species Pentacrinites fossilis from the world famous Jurassic Coast beach of Charmouth, Dorset UK. The fossils measure 210mm (8 3/8 inches) across which is very big for a crinoid fossil. The piece shows some lovely long stems with loads of articulated cirri and along with flowing arms and pinnules all in good detail. There is also a very uncommon crinoid 'mouth'; the central part of the calyx which is rarely preserved as it is normally covered by the arms. This one has however been preserved from the top down showing its lovely detail and strange polygonal arrangement (centre of picture 7). There is a lot of detail for a single crinoid fossil. A lovely snapshot of history. It is preserved in solid calcite with a thin layer of pyrite on the surface. These fossils are hard to find in good condition and are very sought after. A lovely example showing incredible detail. Big examples do not come onto the market often; grab it while you can!
