Have a Happy Bidding!Execrpt from Carl Miller's book "Breweries of Cleveland - reprinted hre with permission from the author.Standard Brewing Company of Cleveland - On Christmas Eve day of 1903, a small west side brewery doing business as the Kress Weiss Beer Company was reorganized as the Standard Brewing Company. Cleveland's only saloonkeeper-owned brewery was under way.The primary figure behind the venture was long-time saloonkeeper Stephan S. Creadon, and the majority of the firm's stock was held by other saloonkeepers. One observer aplly descriped the circumstances surrounding Standard's formation: A unique creation of time is Standard: it is the brewery of innkeepers. Was the local brewing industry began with the first brewers being innkeepers as well and then giving up their inns when their business was good enough, now it is turned around. The innkeepers have joined in sufficient numbers to build a brewery of their own. Stephen S. Creadon grew up in "the angle," a close-knit community on Cleveland's near west side, north of Detroit Avenue. Just across the street from Creadon's establishment sat the Forest City Savings Bank, w friend and fellow Irsihman John T. Feighan worked as a bank teller. Together the two spearheaded creation of the Standard Brewing Company. It is clear that one of their primary goals was to supply beer to saloonkeepers who were suffering the manipulations of the city's competition-entrenched breweries. Perhaps selection of the name "Standard" was significant in that regard; Webster's Dictionary defines the word as "a model to be followed or imitated." That aside, the founders undoubtedly also reconized the potential advantage of establishing the city's only Irish-run brewery. In keeping with the Irish spirit, the flagship product of the Standard brewery for more than half a century was a brand entitled Erin Brew, first introduced in 1904. Despite the decidedly Irish character of the Standard Brewing Company's products, the company was careful not to alienate the large population of beer-consuming Germans. The Erin Brew logo was fashioned to incorporate both the English spelling and the German: "Ehren Brau." The Standard brewery began business in the old plant of the Kress Weiss Beer Company on Sackett Avenue at West 32nd Street. Andrew Kress, the former owner, was one of the incorporaters of the new Standard company, and he remained active in the brewery after its reorganization, serving as general manager. However, in late 1904, operations were moved to Train avenue near Clark, whre a former flour mill was taken over by the company and converted into a brewery. Over the next several years, about $200,000 was spent to improve and enlarge the plant. A towering new brewhouse was completeed in 1906. The following year, a four story stockhouse was built. In 1908, an enormous bottling plant was erected across Train Avenue from the brewhouse. The new facility - capable of bottling 160 barrels of beer daily - was one of the most extensive bottling works in the city. Standard soon claimed to be "the largest independent bottlers of ber in Cleveland." As the brewery complex grew, so too did beer sales. Between 1906 and 1910, annual beer production at the Standard brewery doubled from 35,000 to 70,000 barrels.The Standard Brewing Company's characterization as a "brewery of innkeepers" faded as the business grew.
