OFFERED WITH NO RESERVE is the important 1619 edition of Errard’s ‘Fortification Demonstree et Reduicte en Art par Feu,” one of the fundamental treatises of fortification published during the 17th century, in many respects the foundation of the treatises that followed, and the first treatise of fortification in French, adorned with 30 full-page plates and 5 in-text engravings, constituting some of the most impressive and charming engravings in any work of fortification, and bound in 17th century calf. � The full general title reads as follows: � “La Fortification Demonstree et Reduicte en Art par Feu / I. Errard De Bar Le Duc / Ingenieur du Tres chrestien Roy de France et de Navarre / Reveue corrigee et Augmentee par A. Errard son nepveu aussi Ingenieur ordinaire du Roy suivant les memoires de l’Aucteur / Contre Les grandes Erreurs de l’Impression contrefaicte en Allemaigne Dediee a sa Majeste [1619]” � ERRARD’S “LA FORTIFICATION DEMONSTREE,” ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT TREATISES OF FORTIFICATION, A FOUNDATION OF ALL SUCH WORKS THAT FOLLOWED, WITH 30 DOUBLE-PAGE PLATES OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY, AND 5 IN-TEXT PLATES, PRINTED AT PARIS IN 1619. � This edition was edited by Alexis Errard, nephew of Jean Errard (1554-1610); it is the first French treatise concerning fortification and was first printed in 1600 in an edition of the most extreme rarity. Errard is considered the father of fortification in French. � The volume is complete in all respects, save the part-titles to the first and second parts. It comprises 30 double-page plates, 5 in-text engravings, the engraved title, and 70 numbered folios, plus preliminaries. The volume measures 30.6 cm by 20.5 cm by 2.8 cm; each leaf measures 314 mm by 203 mm. The volume is in very good condition internally, with generally clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. There is slight dampstaining upon a few leaves at the margins, and a chip from the upper margin of the engraved title, just touching the image. There are also penciled architectural drawings upon the endpapers, and a sheet of manuscript notes at the rear of the volume. The volume is bound in 17th century calf. The binding is worn, with both boards detached and the leather upon the spine lost. The book-block is weak, although holding.
