A mixed set of 4 fruit bowls and 4 bread & butter plates from the Museum Dinner Service designed by Eva Zeisel. A seminal achievement in Modernist design, the genesis of this dinnerware began in 1942 with Louis Hellman, president of Castleton China. Wanting to produce a modern dinner service, Hellman approached the Museum of Modern Art seeking an appropriate designer. Eliot Noyes, MOMA's design director, suggested Eva Zeisel. The museum offered its' name in exchange for the right to approve all the final designs. Light cream colored porcelain with clear gloss glaze. Produced by Shenango Pottery of Pennsylvania (investor in and eventual owner of Castleton) for Castleton China, New York, c.1945-1960s.
