We bookplate collectors owe a debt of gratitude to early bibliophiles. Here’s a celebration of just one such collector ....... James Bindley James Bindley (1737–1818), was an English official and antiquary, known as a veracious book collector. He appears to have made a good livelihood as one of the Commissioners of Stamp Duties in London and in that capacity he served for upwards of fifty-three years, ‘living over the shop’ and dying in his residence at Somerset Place. He amassed a huge collection of books and associated antiquities and was the "father" of the Society of Antiquaries of London , having been elected a fellow in 1765. James Bindley, 1819 mezzotint by William Say . For details of Bindley’s collection sold at auction as the “Catalogue of the Curious & Extensive Library” in 1820, see: http://books./books?id=azlbAAAAQAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false Size: 9.5cm x 9.7cm On the verso are stamps which I think indicate the plate is a duplicate from the Franks/ British Museum collection. Franks bequest is less than nlighening, there are four plates listed: 2541 - 2344. Post & Packing Britain £1.00; Europe £1.50; International £2.50 Yes, I am happy to combine postage.
