A nice First Edition copy of this very rare and fascinating work on the ancient peoples who lived on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. The two sites whose excavations are described in this book provide evidence of continuous habitation during the last 2000 years. This book is illustrated throughout with maps, plans, drawings and illustrated plates, showing the ancient artifacts excavated from these sites. "The Yale University Publications in Anthropology embody the results of researches in the general field of anthropology which are directly conducted or otherwise sponsored by the Section of Anthropology of the Department of the Social Sciences in the Graduate School, the Department of Anthropology of the Peabody Museum, and the Department of Anthropology of the Institute of Human Relations. The issues, ranging in size from brief papers to extensive monographs, are numbered consecutively as independent contributions and appear at irregular intervals." Irving Rouse wrote Publication No. 24, "Culture of the Ft. Liberte Region, Haiti," which is a companion volume to this book and which I am also listing on ebay today. Rouse also wrote Publication Nos. 26 and 44: "Archeology of the Maniabon Hills, Cuba" and "A Survey of Indian River Archeology, Florida." Probably only a very small number of copies of this book were published and it is now rare and sought-after. T is only one other copy listed for sale on the internet, worldwide, priced $120. This copy should be as valuable. Such a nice copy is not likely to come up for sale often on ebay. NOTE: T are more pictures at the bottom of this listing. From the Preface: "The cave of maria de la Cruz and the adjoining open site of Hacienda Grande have yielded the most complete sequence of occupations in the Caribbean area, extending from an archaic-age component laid down before the time of Christ to the remains of the present inhabitants. Only the initial lithic age is missing. Together the two sites offer a unique opportunity to examine long term cultural development and adaptation. Maria de la Cruz cave also happens to be one of the few places in the Caribbean area w arhaic refuse has been found underlying Ceramic remains; and Hacienda Grande is the type site for the earliest style of pottery in the Greater Antilles. The two sites thus provide key information about the arrival ceramic-age indians from South America, their contact with the previous Archaic population, and their introduction of agriculture and the worship of zemis..."
