This exquisite New England gem is a treasure from the 1700s! The historic,dated 18thC schoolgirl sampler descended in the family of CORPORAL EDWIN SHAW OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR FAME,and is inscribed;"ELEANOR SHAW WROUGHT THIS IN THE 10 YEAR OF HER AGE 1796". Along with her inscription Eleanor(Ellen) stitched a traditional New England schoolgirl verse with some old Englishspelling and a twist;"THIS WORK IN HANDE MY FRIENDS MAY HAVE,WHEN I SLEEP IN THE SILENT GRAVE". The sampler boasts striking silk highlights of deep navy blue and vibrant mauve....both with vibrant color retention.The mauve particularly dramatic in the strawberry and dianthus horizontal bands..a visual focal point.
