This ivory necklace is, simply stated, GORGEOUS. T is wonderful and obvious grain on the beads with cross-hatching and it has a warm patina. The necklace is 82 cm & 5 mm. long and each of the beads is quite large (about 1o mm.). The clasp is 17 mm. and the beads that the monkey is holding onto are 4 mm. The clasp screws together, in ivory. As can be seen from the pictures, the monkey is a significant, and oh so cute, part of this necklace. I LOVE its face and belly button. The monkey is 8 cm. in length ( 3 inches!) from hand to foot and tail. To visually show the size of the beads, the monkey and the necklace, a dollar has been placed in the last picture. We took the necklace to a jeweler and found out that it is from the 20s or 30s. We are not experts in jewelry, but have done some research. T is a very reasonable reserve. New York State residents must pay 7% sales tax unless you have a tax exemption. Following is some interesting information about the signifcance of the monkey. Monkey mythology predates the arrival of Buddhism. By the time Buddhism reached Japan (mid 6th century AD), the monkey and monkey lore were common elements in Buddhist legend, art and iconography. Monkey worship in Japan peaked in the Edo Era, but has declined significantly since then. Even so, the legacy of monkey faith is easily spotted in modern Japan. read more
