This crown box was created in the 1800's to great standards of workmanship and accuracy of detail, and it is a replica of the original crown box of King Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor of Bohemia (1527 - 1576), which has never been found. Description: Unique and extraordinarily ornate Crown Box, commemorative of the Emperor Maximilian II, made of copper, brass and wood. The hinged cover applied with a plaque of copper wrought with a portrait of the emperor within ornamental scrolls, the edges formed by enforcements of copper applied with colouredsemi-precious stones; the four sides applied with plaques in brass wrought with female allegories for Constantia, Liberalitas, Pietas and Innocentia, accompanied by legendary scenes from Antiquity, raised on four feet formed by satyr's masks, the inside with remains of paper lining. The item has been owned privately in the UK and has been examined for authenticity by curators at Sotheby's. Whilst several art dealers do believe this item is the authentic crown box of King Maximilian, it has not been authenticated and Sotheby's have advised me that in their opinion it is a 19th century replica. In any case, it is a unique and extraordinary collectable. Measurements: Height: 14 inches Width / Diameter: 11 inches Depth: 13 inches Item Date: second half 19th century
