From the African Art Collection of Julie and David Wadsworth, USAID Rural Water Project, Maseru, Lesotho, Southern Africa 1981-89.My parents collected this exquisite bust of a young Shona woman when the traveled to Harare, Zimbabwe during their stay in Southern Africa in the 1980s.The bust is made of verdite - a type of stone found only in Southern Africa with Zimbabwe having the largest deposits. This very naturalistic carving depicts a young Shona woman or maiden of marriageable age as is evidenced by the type of hairstyle she wears. The bust is approximately 10.5" tall (at tallest point) by 5" wide and 5.25" deep. It is quite heavy, weighing almost 10 lbs. There are no chips or cracks. There is naturally occurring variegation in the coloring of the stone.
