This Fabulous ANTIQUE serving PLATTER and COVER is made by F.B. Rogers Silver Company, 1883 and is hallmark engraved on the platter back.THIS IS SILVER ON COPPER!T is also the number 7721Silver plate is the result of a process that bonds pure silver to the desired base. Silver plating is done by transferring a uniform layer of pure silverfrom a silver ingot or bar to the surface of the item being plated.Sheffield plating was the first silver plating technique used. It consisted of attaching a thin skin of sterling to one or both sides of a copper brick, rolling it into flat sheets, and then working it in a similar manner as silver. This technique was replaced in 1842, when electroplating (or sterling silver deposited by electrolysis on a base metal) was introduced.What caught my eye with this set was the beautifully engraved 16" x 14 1/2" X 3" high, ornately scrolled , double handled four footed tray.... this is not your ordinary flat tray.....the presence of the tray commands an essence all it's own . Than t is the wonderful high rise cover... 6" tall X 13 1/4" X 12 1/4"perfect for serving a TURKEY, FISH, or HAM during the HOLIDAYS... for Vegans ...
