This Fabulous ANTIQUE serving PLATTER and COVER is made by F.B. Rogers Silver Company, 1883 and is hallmark engraved on the platter back.
THIS IS SILVER ON COPPER! T is also the number 7721 Silver plate is the result of a process that bonds pure silver to the desired base. Silver plating is done by transferring a uniform layer of pure silverfrom a silver ingot or bar to the surface of the item being plated.Sheffield plating was the first silver plating technique used. It consisted of attaching a thin skin of sterling to one or both sides of a copper brick, rolling it into flat sheets, and then working it in a similar manner as silver. This technique was replaced in 1842, when electroplating (or sterling silver deposited by electrolysis on a base metal) was introduced. What caught my eye with this set was the beautifully engraved 16" x 14 1/2" X 3" high, ornately scrolled , double handled four footed tray.... this is not your ordinary flat tray.....the presence of the tray commands an essence all it's own . Than t is the wonderful high rise cover... 6" tall X 13 1/4" X 12 1/4"perfect for serving a TURKEY, FISH, or HAM during the HOLIDAYS... for Vegans ... TEMPE SURPRISE. this set is in VERY GOOD condition..... very mild wear WHICH IS TO BE EXPECTED OF A PIECE THAT IS OVER 100 YEARS OLD. Also, some mild rubbing from polishing.... still a brilliant beautiful luster when polished.... F.B. Rogers was founded in Shelburne Falls MA in 1883 and moved to Taunton MA in 1886. It eventually became a division of The National Silver Co and is still in business as such.
