This is a wonderful find. It is an antique sterling match safe that features a fire-breathing griffin on both sides! The match safe measures 2-1/2" high, 1-5/8" wide and 1/2" deep. It is in excellent condition, with only the world's smallest pings on the corners. It may be possible to catch one's fingernail on the seam at the top corner, but this is not a hole. I mention these tiny flaws only to be thorough. It is engraved, "LME" in period script on the front. The clasp closes tightly with a "snap!" The match safe is marked inside on both flanges, "Sterling G" ; I believe this is the mark for the Gilbert Company. I have been careful not to over-polish the piece, so it may appear dark in the pictures. Match safes of this quality have become almost impossible to find. It is a great piece, and I will guarantee its authenticity, dating to circa 1900.
