This is a GORGEOUS RARE antique Victorian gold leaf wood shelf that is ALL HAND CARVED! What a BEAUTY! It has a LARGE FABULOUS BIRD (I don't know what kind of bird it is) which measures 6" long and 5 5/8" tall, standing on a branch and his beak is right next to a large rose, with another flower next to it. There are also 3 other flowers next to the edge at the front of the bird. There are leaves and there are WONDERFUL scrolls and more! The bird is very DETAILED and INTRICATE DETAIL and you can see his feathers. The bird appears to be perchard on a "rocky" ledge. The shelf top itself measures 1/2" thick and is a separate piece to the ornate base. It is beveled on the bottom edge. Very UNIQUE is the wood piece that comes up to it and is fluted and ruffled and has the flowers and scrolls on it! It is obvious that a LOT of WORK went into carving this very BEAUTIFUL, ORNATE shelf! It has two brass loop hooks in a carved recessed niche and they are nailed onto the back and are a little higher than the shelf. It measures 10" top shelf to bottom (10 5/8" at the brass hooks.) I have tried to describe this piece but I am no expert on this kind of antique but it is a BEAUTY in any event! CONDITION: Good for a piece this old. The gold leafing is missing in places and you can see the venetian red that the gold leafing was applied to and it is darker on the back of the bird and in other places. The gold color is not as bright as the photos show. I found one small 3/8" hairline crack on the branch the bird has his left foot is on. I don't know what that part of the foot is called but it is like the "elbow" and (not his claw) that meets the leaf scroll right at that spot. It cannot be seen except from the back of the shelf anyway. There is a hairline crack in the back of the bird's wing that is closest to the wall part of the shelf and it can barely be seen only 1/8" in front and does not go all the way through. The detailed base that the bird has his other claw on has a crack in the BACK (that goes against the wall) and it does not go all the way through the base and also cannot be seen in front. There is a small area 1/4" on the back base of the fancy scroll that the bird has his right foot in front of, which I think is how it was made because it is a straight divide. This is a very, very old piece and it is normal for it to have some these things that occur with age and with all that is going on I had trouble finding them so I know they are all but impossible to see.
