"Animals of the Savannah" Banana leaf 'collages' have been part of African art for centu ries. Native to Kenya, banana leaf art is composed by cutting tiny slices of banana leaves and then weaving and pasting them together to create a ‘painting’. The artist creates an original and unique design by drying the leaves outdoors to achieve the various colors. Leaves dried in full sun are black, while those in the shade are a yellow hue. All other tones are a combination of sun and shade. The cut banana pieces are glued together to form the picture. The banana leaves are sometimes dyed to create a more dimensional or realistic effect. Banana leaf mosaics are made from dried banana leaf fibers mounted on black muslin which is left unfinished on the edges. This gives the buyer an opportunity to showcase them in any method they like. Shellack is used to protect the natural colors. This work was done by Charles Nganga of Nakuru. It measures approximately 9 1/2" X 12 1/2". The mosaic itself measures approximately 6 1/2" X 10"and is perfect for framing. This is a Fair Trade item. The craftsman is part of a co-op that uses sustainable resources and green practices. They are paid a fair wage for their products to help sustain indigenous peoples in poverty stricken countries. (Due to their handmade nature, t may be some variations in the designs) read more
