An amusing hand painted Victorian style FAIRING of a comical scene entitled "The Attentive Maid" It measures 4 inches wide. Has impressed date. (Fairings are so called because they were originally given away by travelling fairs as prizes throughout Britain. They were produced mainly in Germany towards the end of the 19th century (1880 - 1914). Imports stopped dramatically with the onset of the first world war and have never resumed to the same degree. They were produced very inexpensively in porcelain which was something that Staffordshire Potteries in the UK were unable to compete with at the time. After the war (WW1) Britain (Staffordshire Potteries) managed to catch up and produce porcelain at competitive prices themselves)
