You are bidding on a scarce Victorian-style Bible in the very rare and highly prized Douay and Rhemish Version. The "Holy Bible Containing the Entire Canonical Scriptures...translated from The Latin Vulgate: Diligently compared with the Hebrew, Greek, etc"... Published in Philadelphia by National Publishing Company in 1884. Fully adorned gilt designed cross patterned Full-Leather covers. Almost 4" thick w/gilt edged pages and moire endpapers. Beautiful gilt and thick tooled and designed leather decorative covers. Loaded with a ton of Dore B&W plates, and some heavily gilted and colored plates. Both the front and back covers are moderately worn and detached, yet still pretty bright and mostly clear in decorativeness. This Bible has seen its day. Many pages are disbound and disheveled and placed towards the beginning, are heavily chipped, and are flaking to the touch on the edges. There is some browning, but for the most part clean. If you can look past the first group of detached, messy pages, this is still a great find. Many of the plates are crisp and salvageable. There is also a family record marriage plate, noting a marriage of the Booth (makes you wonder if this is a relative of Mr. John Wilkes Booth, President Abe Lincoln's killer?) family in Texas (originally from Alabama), as well as photo holder at rear which is unfortunately read more
