This auction is for a wonderful piece of scrimshaw. In doing research I see these referred to as whale teeth. I do not know and cannot guarantee it; I originally thought this was a horn from a cow; although it is short measuring 6 1/2 inches long, tip to tip. I do not know if this is an original piece or a reproduction and have no idea how to tell. I can tell you that the scrimshaw is wonderful with great detail. The tooth? is carved on both sides; on one side is a bald eagle with an olive branch in it's beak, a flag or shield across it's chest with a banner that says Freedom Liberty. On the other side of the tooth is a wonderful image of a great ship and a black person pulling a crate on wheels. Under this image is printed; "Merrils Wharf, New Bedford". Encircling the end of the tooth is a scrimshaw chain which is held in the eagle's talons. I find no artist signature or date anyw on the tooth/horn. The tooth and the scrimshaw are in wonderful condition. T are no breaks, holes, cracks, etc. The art work is wonderful; I cannot say enough about the beauty of this item. It looks wonderful displayed; it is a fantastic accent piece. Great to add to a collection. Please email with questions or to request additional photos.
