Since 1934 comics were always a dime. Publishers solved the inflation problem by simply cutting the number of pages from 64 to 56 to 48 to 40 and ultimately to 32.The feeling was that kids wouldn't buy a comic that had less than 32 pages - it would be too thin and flimsy - and they wouldn't pay more than a dime. So what to do???Well, the accountants won the battle and prices increased to 12 cents. Now, what about the newsstands, drug stores and candy stores? They hated the idea that they would need to give 3 pennies change every time a kid bought a 12 cent comic with a dime and a nickel. What a hassle for a lousy extra 2 cents!That's when some sharp guy decided to print rolls of little round 15 cent stickers that could be placed right over the printed 12 cent price on the cover. He could sell these rolls to anyone who sold comics! And many, many places bought them and stuck them on comic books from coast-to-coast, and the sticker salesman made a ton of cash.It's heart-breaking to see beautiful vintage Silver-Age books with these little round stickers, but as the saying goes, "it is what it is. read more
