This Fashion Magazine was first published in 1821 and fashion plates entered a new age where they were made more scenic and became conversation pieces. It is an important Paris magazine and developed the fashion plate into a composition with interesting backgrounds. Le Petit Courrier des Dames had begun life as Nouveau Journal des Dames in 1821. This was an important French fashion magazine and it produced a weekly issue uninterrupted until 1865. Each issue had one or two fashion plates and many are considered the finest in the C19th. Artists who made some of the finest plates were Madame Florensa de Closmenil, A. Pauquet, Hervy, Laure Noel, A. de Taverne and E. Preval. Paris was the capital for fashion innovation and design. After the final defeat of Napoleon, English and French fashions merged to close accord. What was in vogue in Paris would be worn by fashionable ladies in Vienna, Berlin, Rome and London. The hand-coloured French fashion engraving was responsible for filtering the new styles throughout the major cities of Europe and thus represented great wealth to the clothing industry of Paris. This original engraving stands as both a beautiful and scarce example of 1800's fashion art. The plates give the address of the journal and a brief description of the fashions. If the fashion is available at a particular store, the address is given. The name of the hair stylist is also usually given as well.
