This trombone has the famous "bear" on the bell that was Olds' trademark. The smooth clean line of the trombone is remarkable. In addition, this inscription is in excellent condition, very crisp and decorative. The serial number, 60XX dates the horn to 1930, and makes it one of the very first produced. It is pitched in B-flat, and is in immaculate condition. The horn was in better than excellent vintage condition, and we enhanced it with a chem cleaning and polish. We took out a few small dents and dings. The water key is new. The inners are spotless. The tuning mechanism is in the slide, as it is in most of these models. This is a press fit slide . The slide is perfect, smooth and well balanced. The horn was manufactured at the LosAngeles , California Olds plant. The bell is silver plate with 14K gold washings and a deco Olds inscription of the bear playing the trombone that is so interesting. . It is seven inches wide. The tuning slide key moves with ease. . The slide is very fast with excellent compression and allows the player to achieve remarkable slide vibrato with simple ease. This is an excellent horn for orchestra or symphonic band as well as for jazz, ska or small combo work. About this model: "Self Balancing" was the Olds name for it's major trombone model line in the early 1930's. Called that because the weight of the bell was light enough to make the horn easy to play for long periods without the use of a counterweight, and without any brace to the upper bell, it was revolutionary in its time. The smooth clean line of the trombone is remarkable. The horns were produced with varying degrees of hand done bell decoration, and varying gold and silver options. This was considered a professional model. The narrow bore and straight sound was well suited to the developing Jazz sound of the time. This is a top-notch professional instrument as well as an investment quality collectible. TThis is really a true Jazz horn. It has a beautiful tone, and a resonating Jazz sound that is unique.
