They're not in it to win, they just like the rush of having some action.• Some people bet just to have an excuse to go to the sports bar and swear at the TV with their friends.• Psychologists will tell you that some people gamble because deep down they want to lose. Seems strange, but the academics insist.• Others don't really care about winning because they don't have to. If you're a corporate executive making $700,000 a year, and a $50 bettor, your time is certainly better spent on your career and not your sports betting hobby.Yes, I want to win: Assuming you're someone who doesn't fit into the categories above, someone who really wants to win. You're in the right place.This series of reports (they'll be more in upcoming days) is designed for people who want to win. They may not want to be a full time sports bettor. But they want to win a few bucks. Or maybe supplement their income by winning consistently. Or maybe they do, in fact, want to be a full time sports bettor. After all, the rewards can be great for those who succeed.There are dozens upon dozens of important concepts in sports betting. Let's look at four for now...Concept 1: Understanding Your Sports. When is the First Half a Better Bet than the Full Game?Sometimes betting the first half in a football game (or a basketball game, or a baseball game) can be a decidedly better bet than a full game.Let's use a football example. Say that you like a 1-point underdog in a NFL game. They are +1-point for the game, +1/2-point in the first half and maybe +105 or so on the money line.Should you just fire away and take the dog plus a point (note: this is true for any NFL dog of less than 3), or is there a better way?To answer this question let's think about the scoring patterns of a NFL game.The most likely result of any given NFL game is the favorite winning by 3 points. This happens in nearly 10% of all NFL games, and in low lined games like this it is actually more. So the most likely result of this game is "favorite by 3".The most likely result of any given NFL game's first half is a tie.So if you bet the team at +1 for the game, the most likely final score of that game, favorite wins by 3, is a loss for you .But if you bet the same team in the first half at +½ , the most likely half time score of that game, a tie, is a win for you .Are their instances when the favorite leads at halftime and the dog comes back to cover? Of course. But the reverse can be true as well. And the sports bettor with a good head on his shoulder accepts these anomalies and knows that it is almost always better to bet the NFL small dog in the first half.This is just a single instance of when the first half is better than the game. There are plenty more. The better you understand the inner workings of the sports you bet on, in this case the patterns of scoring in NFL games, the better bets you will find.Concept 2: How Can 3 rd Grade Math Help You As A Sports Bettor?In basketball, there are only a few key margins that are important, and no key totals. The scoring is very fair, happening in 1's, 2's, and 3's and with a lot of scoring frequency, games can land on almost any number.Football is different, certain margins happen more frequently than others. A sports bettor knows that key margins in football revolve around scoring happening in 3's and 7's. So a team is likely to score 17 or 20, or 21, or 24, or 27 points.Armed with this knowledge, sometimes the numbers available to you can key a wager on their own.Many sports books offer "team totals" on games, especially on big games and nationally televised games. That's where some simple third-grade math comes in. Say that a game has a 7 point favorite and an over/under line of 41. Our simple third-grade math tells us that a final score of 24-17 is projected by that line. But you go to the "team totals" and you see that your sportsbook has an over/under line on the favorite's team total of 24½.Why is the total 24½ and not 24? The sports book knows that many fans, especially on a nationally televised game, love to play "overs". So they inflate the line a little bit to adjust. Teams often score 3 touchdowns and a field goal. That makes 24 a key number. In this instance, the mere fact that the total is 24½ and not 24 can be very powerful and takes you from a bet not worth making to one that puts you in positive territory.Concept 3: The Power of SpecializationBasketball is a tremendous betting sport because there is so much opportunity. 30 NBA teams play 82 games apiece. And of the 341 college teams, well over 200 have nearly every single one of their 30+ games lined. There's simply a ton of action available for the sports bettor.Because of all that action, a bettor can focus on just a certain segment of the basketball world and get a real edge. If you have an edge you need a sizable number of opportunities to put that edge into play. So it's kind of silly to think of someone focusing on just the NFC Central or the Big Ten in football. You simply won't generate a lot of bets.On the other hand, being a real specialist can really make sense in basketball. If you follow the Big Ten, or the Sun Belt, or the Missouri Valley, or the NBA Atlantic and Central Divisions, you can really learn a lot about those teams, their strengths, their weaknesses, their coaching patterns, etc.Importantly, you can generate enough plays to put that edge you have into play. So in a sport that has a lot of action, consider specialization of a conference, a division, or a region of the country. It makes sense and many successful basketball bettors operate in this fashion.Concept 4: Times Change, Change WithThem.Many big time college basketball teams play in tournaments in November andDecember in far flung places. Not too many years ago, teams that played in holiday tournaments in Alaska and Hawaii would be automatic bet-againsts in their first game back to the Continental 48. The arduous travel would leave them tired, jet-lagged, run down, and worn out. That would lead to a poor performance. It was a very strong factor, nearly an automatic bet for many smart players.But then something interesting happened. The teams coming back from the Maui Classic, the Great Alaska Shootout, the Rainbow Classic, and the other holiday events, started winning their share of games. More importantly, they started covering their share of pointspreads. What happened?There are a couple of factors at play here. The sports books got sick and tired of getting tattooed by the bettors and started adjusting the lines. That took a little of value away.And the players seem to be less effected by the travel. Many of them travel all over the place in AAU ball, playing 4 or 5 games a day. And the top players go from elite camp to elite camp in the summer and simply ball all day. They were used to hotels, airports, buses, and dealing with jet lag. The travel didn't effect them the way it once did, and smart bettors reacted to the change.Want More?
