(More pictures and full specification below) This gorgeous breakfast plate was made in the art deco era of 1930s Britain by a Staffordshire firm called Decoro Pottery, owned by R H & S L Plant. The plate has a striking all-over decoration of bright green leaves and deeply coloured flowers - polyanthus or primulas perhaps? It is rimmed in black, with a background glaze of a creamy custard yellow, and the floral decoration is completely hand-painted, with a clear surface glaze on top. Photos of similar Decoro pieces can be seen on the Potteries website and on the Decoro Collectors' website. Tuscan Decoro Pottery The works appear to have started out as the Canning Pottery in Canning Street, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, between 1896 and 1907, a property belonging to R H & S L Plant. Sometime between 1912 and 1921 the Canning Pottery Co was formed and Harold J Plant (son of R H Plant) was a partner. Their principal production was teapots and jugs but in 1923 they registered the 'Decoro' trademark, with a trademark registration number of 429479. [Note that this number appears on these wares and is not the same as the British Registry numbers.] These Decoro wares were of an all-over decoration in dark colours and were a sideline to their principal production of teapots. The Decoro brand name was also used in conjuction with Plant's 'Tuscan' range of Art Pottery. The production of this type of Decoro appears to have finished about 1930, when the factory expanded its teapot and jug manufacture. In 1932 they started producing a 'Decoro Flame' ware with a striated glaze effect and later, in 1933, they introduced a more floral hand-painted ware that still carried the 'Decoro' trade mark. The factory ceased production sometime between 1936 and 1940. (With thanks to the Potteries website.) Details, condition and spec... The plate measures about 22 cm/8.5" across, and weighs about 378 gms/13.3 oz unwrapped; I estimate final packaged weight at around 850 gms. It is marked with Tuscan Decoro Pottery, and Made in England , numbers D468/808 (468 is the shape number, 808 is the pattern number) and a decorator's mark. It will date to the 1930s. The plate is in superb condition, with no damage, cracks, wear or staining at all, and just some faint surface crazing as expected with older pieces (see photos below).
