African Tribal Art Kuba Pwoom Itok Mask Congo Material: wood, metal, shells, beads, feathers etc Condition: some damage, signs of use Size: approx 25" high (64cm) Kuba Pwoom Itok Mask Congo The extraordinary conical eyes are common to many styles of pwoom itok masks, made by the Kuba for initiation ceremonies, funerals and other important communal events. This is an exceptionally fine example, with a magnificent royal headdress made with beads, shells and feathers. The mask has been enhanced with a triangular brass plaque in the brow which appears to have originally been a European item! The red material which has been used to coat much of the face is tukula , a paste made of camwood bark and camphor, and extensively used by the Kuba to decorate both their own bodies and ritual items.
