African Tribal Art Lwena (Lovale) Mask Angola Size: approx. 10" high (26cm) Material: wood, pigment, raffia Condition: good Age: mid-20th Century Lwena Mask Angola The Lwena (Lovale) are a culture with close ties to the Chokwe. Their belief in the spiritual power of women is, if anything, even stronger than that of the Chokwe. This fabulous mask represents Nalindele , the great female deity of the Lwena. She is the personification of wisdom, and when she is danced, she imparts the power of thought to those who watch her. Like most of these masks, it is dish-shaped, with elaborate scarification patterns, inlaid with coloured pigment. Each of the discs on the forehead represents the sun. Repeated three times, it represents the zenith, the all-powerful midday sun. A fine, rare Lwena mask from Angola. Please see further photos below.
