A beautiful early American-made oil lamp of brass and marble dating to the middle of the 19th century.Astral type small lamp with a pear-shaped font of sheet brass patterned with pleated petal designs and a sturdy reeded column shaft on marble slab base.Finely textured reeding on the shaft and a vented capital disc.Large and nicely detailed multi step base collar and well-veined white marble slab. The font has an upper folded brim that probably would have held a prism ring.Original brass collar that sits in a recessed well showing evidence of a solder around the base.Appears to have been done to refasten the collar and although less noticeable than the flash reveals, should have been done more discreetly and with less solder. This is an outstanding small lamp that is well made,of good weight, and is still of solid joinings with good stability.Feels strong and substantial in the hand and is of a pleasing diminutive size and portly shape.Stands about 9 inches high on a base of nearly 4 1/2 inches square. The brass is in lovely condition and in a gleaming golden shade.A fine example of early American lighting in a form of lamp that is one of the most beautiful produced in the Antebellum period.Circa 1850-1860.
