Finest Early 19th C Italian Micromosaic Scenic Jewel Casket ~ St. Peter's Square ~ For your consideration... Early 19th century (circa 1830) Italian * Grand Tour * Souvenir Silver & Vermeil? Gold-plated? Jewel Casket with Micromosaic Scenic Plaque and enamel accents. The casket is footed and stands level on four goat? cloven-hooves. Measures an impressive 4" x 3" x 3.25" height The lid is mounted with a 1.5" dia. micromosaic plaque of St. Peter's Square, Rome. Figures ( nuns?) can be seen standing amidst the architectural splendor of St. Peter's Square and the Vatican. The intricately rendered micro mosaic scene is museum quality and is in impeccable condition! It is created with hundreds of tiny glass tiles or tessarae set into a raised oval of malachite which is mounted within a gilt filigree border. The hand painted enameling is further detailed with engraved outlines in an intricate zigzag pattern. The hinge and latch are in good working order, the interior is lined with pale yellow tuft silk cushion and shows use. I can find no hallmarks. Offered for the connoisseur of rare antique boxes in excellent original condition with only a few minor losses to the enamel work. Please see photos, they are an accurate representation and more are available upon request. All in all a stunning addition for the advanced collector
