The First Sportman's Gazette 23 Royal Fusiliers (1st Sportsman's) Bn. A Weekly Journal Devoted to Battalion Notes and News. Vol.1 No.7 February 5th 1915.. 18 pages. Fascinating historical document of the Sportsman's Battalion,The 23rd Royal Fusiliers (1st Sportsman's) encouraged sportsmen including cricketers, footballers, golfers, hunters, adventurers, climbers to enlist and those from a more affluent backround were encouraged to join the colours. The upper age for enlistment was higher than other regiments due to influence of Mrs Cunliffe-Owen who idea it was to form this battalion. Interestingly in this edition the editorial raises the subject of Mrs Cunliffe-Owen and her call for upper and middle classes and men joining having to pay three guineas which caused controversy when the Daily Express published an article about the subject. It includes the letters from Col. Maitland Commanding Officer 23rd Royal Fusiliers (1st Sportsman's) in response to the article in the Daily Express. Green paper cover in good overall condition, crease on top right hand corner. See others listed.
