This is a rare find, a 24" A. J. Fisher model pond yacht. These boats were built through a program at many schools but mainly the Detroit public school system. The program started in 1927 and ended around the 80's. Model yachts were popular with high school manual arts teachers (and students) at the time all over, and the Detroit Public Schools boasted the longest-lived high school model yacht program in the country. Back in 1927, Detroit Public Schools manual arts instructors Earl Phillipsand Charles Pozzini (a nationally-known carver of wooden decoys) were inspired by the races held at the new Belle Isle Model Yacht basin to start a model yacht club in their school. The two teachers became well-known for their successful program and even authored a book about how to build and race model yachts. A company called A.J. Fisher, Inc. based in Royal Oak sold their plans (with complicated non-RC steering mechanisms) to model yacht enthusiasts for many years.This particular boat was built in 1968, during the hey day of the program. I bought it and was able to contact the original owner through the postage on the package. The son of the owner told me his father built 2 boats but only completed and sailed this one. The actual boat does show some age, there are a couple of nicks in the paint and the sails have some staining. This is a hand read more
