Beautiful Refinished R & G Everwear Brand Flat Top Steamer Trunk With Manufacturer's Tag, Straps and Buckles, Working Lock & Key, and Interior Tray Here is a really nice clean collectible refinished signed steamer trunk. This trunk should date back to around 1900 or so. This beautiful trunk has the trunk maker's metal tag located at the top front edge. It is signed, "Rauchbach-Goldsmith Co. R & G Everwear Trunks Office & Factory Newark N.J.". A lot of the trunks that we refinish do not have trunk maker tags. Therefore, it is nice when we do have one with a tag so we know the trunk's origin. This trunk has the following dimensions: from left to right across the front is 34 inches, from floor to top is 23 inches, and from front edge to back edge is 21 1/2 inches. This lovely trunk is made up of pine base wood with oak outer slat boards. The wooden parts have been lightly sanded and have received three coats of polyurethane to protect the wood and give it it's nice appearance. The wood is in it's natural patina. It is a medium reddish brown color and no staining of the wood was done during the refinishing process. The wood has a few typical beauty marks or character marks which include some older nicks and dings concentrated on to the outer slat boards along with a couple of hairline stress cracks. This trunk maker did a nice job of using metal hardware on this trunk, especially the front, top, and back edge of the top is encased with a band of metal. Not too many trunk makers do that metal encasement around the front and back edge of the top. The metal parts on this trunk are not brass, except for the trunk maker's label. If they were brass, we would have polished them. Since they are not, we have painted the metal by hand in a nice black and gold pattern. This trunk comes with the original working lock. We have found a key that DOES fit this lock and make it work. This trunk had straps with buckles originally. The original ones have eroded away, so we have run a nice pair of Amish made leather straps with roller buckles up the front and across the top under the original strap hold downs. These straps keepers or hold downs have been repainted. The front latches on this trunk work properly and are pretty nice. This trunk has a very nice combination of wood, metal, and leather components. What a beautiful coffee table or storage chest for the foot of the bed this trunk would make. We should mention that we are calling it a flat top, although there is a very slight factory arch to the top most likely noticeable in the side view picture. The handles were missing and have been replaced with black leather straps. This is one of our nicer trunks that we have been hanging onto for the holiday season which is fast approaching. Our refinished trunks similar to this one have been making wonderful holiday season gifts for over 9 years now on ebay. Here is your opportunity to purchase some of our forefathers' nice workmanship. Going to the inside of this steamer trunk, we have removed the paper lining and we have made a tray for this trunk that rests at the top edge. You can store items inside the tray, then lift it up and place more items deep inside the trunk. The interior wood and tray have received two coats of topcoat to preserve the wood and help eliminate any offensive odors. The glue that the factory used to hold the paper onto the interior wood has left some areas of lighter discoloration on the wood. There is a split picture showing some of these markings. Just thought we should mention it. Other than that, the interior is in pretty good condition considering the age of this trunk. A nice picture of a Victorian woman standing in a boat on a pond has been added to the underside of the top. You could put a lot of blankets, clothing, collectibles, and/or personal items inside of this trunk.
