For specific reasons (related to private problems), this drawing is being brought back on the market by his present Dutch owner.The drawing, executed in pen, ink and grey wash on laid paper, depicts a scene in an inn. A group of peasants and two women, seem to have good time, drinking an socialising. One of them is teasing an elderly man who felt asleep in an armchair. In our opinion, this drawing must have been a study for a genrepainting.Authorship : the drawing is from the Flemish school. The way the central figure is depicted, makes it possible to identify the artist with a high degree of probability. The drawing is attributed to David Ryckaert III, also called the Younger. We do thank Mr. K. Mu. for his confirmation, regarding this attribution.DAVID RYCKAERT III (Antwerp 1612 - Antwerp 1661) : Also calle David Ryckaert the Younger. Flemish painter. He was taught by his father David Ryckaert II. In 1636 he became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke, and in 1652 he was appointed Dean of the Guild. His brother-in-law, Gonzales Coques was his pupil. Among his patrons was Archduke Leopold William, governor of the Spanish Netherlands. Ryckaert began his career as a landscape painter but soon specialized in genre scenes under the influence of Adriaen Brouwer and David Teniers the Younger.
