Up for auction is a T. Rathbone, Tunstall, Staffordshire, England, Stoke-On-Trent ( 1898 to 1923,1924: sources vary), Flow Blue, Staffordshire Art Pottery, Large Footed Jardiniere Vase / Planter Pot with a Rams Head on each side, and a Decorative Flower / Leaf Design done in a Rich Cobalt Flow Blue Glaze Treatment and Gold Gilding. This is a rather large, magnificent and beautiful footed jardiniere by the T. Rathbone, Staffordshire, England Pottery. Located in the town of Tunstall they were a rather short lived company for a pottery from the area also known as Stoke-On-Trent. In fact, only 25 to 26 years in business has to make items such as this one scarce if not rare. Especially in this condition. I can only find a few factory flaws and since nothing else has happened post production, I have no problem calling this piece MINT. T are no chips, cracks or glaze problems of any kind. This piece is clean and without stains or crazing. In fact the only reason I believe I was lucky enough to acquire the piece was because of my keen observance. This piece was with other large modern Chinese jardinieres and I believe that is why it stayed unnoticed. Something told me to take the time to check it out regardless of how new it looked. This I have to admit was a lesson learned from almost overlooking a 100 plus year old Weller jardiniere once, because I thought it looked too new. Just because a piece looks new and in great condition, doesn't mean its not old. People have been admiring and taking care of their pottery forever and with a little luck the next generation it passes down to will do the same. This Staffordshire Art Pottery Company is also listed as an "earthenware" pottery. If that is the case and this pot is not true porcelain, it is very highly vitrified and very close. This awsome jardiniere is splendid with its double ram heads, one on each side along with the flower and leaf pattern, it's eye appealing and simply stunning. I wish I could tell you more about the T. Rathbone Pottery, but they don't even seem to have been involved in any of the mergers or buy-outs that have lead to todays "Big 3" Staffordshire companies. I have given you plenty of photographs for viewing and any similar looking photo is the piece being turned a 1/4 or 1/2 turn so you see it all. I have also provided you with close-ups of the ram heads along with the top and bottom of the piece. I mentioned flaws and these are mainly small areas w the cobalt glaze did not ad to the piece. These are small and you will notice one is on the nose of one of the rams. I also have taken a close-up photo of one of the 3 feet. This shows a small seperation or firing fissure which has been with the piece since the day it came out of the kiln. It is not a problem, it is not loose or cracked in anyway. This is just a natural and slight seperation that will often be found on late 19th and early 20th century pottery pieces. This jardiniere stands 9 5/8 inches tall w the ram's horn protrudes slightly over the top edge. The rest of the piece around is 9 1/4 inches tall. Across the top from ram head to ram head it is 12 3/4 inches and going across the other way it is 9 1/2 inches long. The top edge is rolled in slightly and the actual opening is about 8 3/4 inches in diameter. The piece is not exactly circular, but very close. Below the top rolled rim you can see that it turns inward to a beautiful geometric band and then out again as it tapers to the footed base. Each foot measures about 7/14 inches across to the next foot when you go from the foot's farthest point to the next foot's farthest point. This is a very solid piece of pottery weighing 6 pounds, 15 ounces. I want anyone reading this to know, that I never charge a handling or labor fee for shipping and that is a promise. This piece weighing in at almost 7 pounds and my experience are having me estimate a shipping weight of 10 to 11 pounds.
