This extremely rare chyphering book was done by a schoolmaster from PA and depicts all kinds of mathematical examples under various headings that are done in various calligraphies, some colored and some uncolored. The book measures 12.5" by 7.75" and is divided into three sections because the binding has separated from age. The first two sections comprise 93 pages and are both in pretty good shape. The upper three quarters of each page are in excellent condition; the bottom quarter has some minor mildew issues, but can still be read but not as sharp as the upper three quarters. An example of the bottom quarter of a page in the first two sections can be seen in photo number 11. The last section of the book (pages 94 through 122) has been seriously damaged by mildew and can be seen in photo number 12. Still the upper half of each page is in good shape, but the bottom half is very smeared. The bottom sections of the pages are more brittle than the tops. The book is labeled "Levi John's Cyphering Book". I believe that it also states "West Vincent School October 25th Anna Domini 1837". Mr. John must have been a mathematician. His hand-scripted examples are meticulously written and are replete with numerous headings in various folk art calligraphies. There are many different examples of script, printing and calculations demonstrating read more
