FORT BENTON,MONTANA SETTLEMENTS WERE ESTABLISHED IN THIS AREA BY THE FUR TRADERS AS EARLY AS 1830s. IN 1847 A SETTLEMENT ON THE BANKS OF THE MISSOURI WAS FOUNDED, CALLED FORT CLAY AND IN 1850 WAS RENAMED "FORT BENTON". THE FORT WAS BENIFICAL TO THE EXPANSION TO THE WEST WITH STEAM SHIPS AND BOATS OF ALL KINDS TRANSPORTING PIONEERS,GOLD SEEKERS, MERCHANTS AND GOODS UP AND DOWN THE MISSOURI. THE FORT AND TOWN BOOMED WITH BUSINESS UNTELL THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILROAD ARRIVED IN THE LATE 1800s AND TOOK OVER MUCH OF THE FREIGHT MOVING THAT THE BOATS AND STEAMSHIPS HAD BEEN DOING. THE LAST STEAMBOAT DOCKED AT FORT BENTON IN 1890. DUE TO LACK OF BUSINESS THE FORT WAS ABANDONED IN 1881 AND BECAUSE THE FORT WAS BUILT OF ADOBE BRICKS IT SOON WENT INTO RAPID DECAY.
